The Truth No One Told You About Life

I’m obsessed with the show “Friends”. If we knew each other in real life, you would hear me quote it at least once a week. But more often than not, it’s almost daily.

Last night, I had the show on and was listening to the lyrics to the opening song by The Rembrandts, “I’ll Be There For You”. I don’t know how many t.v. shows have theme songs that ring so true to real life. The opening line to the song:

So no one told you life was gonna be this way

Yep, no one did. If you haven’t watched the show, that is the theme of the show. The characters are constantly getting shocked with what life is really like, just as we are in our own lives.

I think the thing the draws me into the show is the fact that no other show makes their characters go through life they way we would. Maybe you have never been left at the alter or left someone at the alter or been divorced three times, but I’m sure if you started to get to know the people around you (not just your immediate circle), you’d find out that you know people that match the characters in “Friends”.

I find aspects of myself in bits and pieces of these characters. Monica, Rachel and Phoebe (oh Phoebe…), they each are reaching for something but have struggles to get there. They have the craziest relationships (mine have been entertaining, we can agree) as they search for love. Monica and Rachel take a long time to realize their loves are right in front of them while Phoebe has the weirdest first date to meet her’s.

These women struggle with the careers from success to failure. They to from having money to being broke and back to success again. But you see them clawing their way to make it happen.

The writers have these characters become women in front of you. You have a chance to see how much they change over the years. You watch them freak out when they become parents.

The reason I love this show so much is because I relate to it. As the lyrics say,

So no one told you life was gonna be this way
Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D.O.A.
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear
When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, but

I’ll be there for you
(When the rain starts to pour)
I’ll be there for you
(Like I’ve been there before)
I’ll be there for you
(‘Cause you’re there for me too)

Luckily, I have friends that can make that claim in my life. They are there for me. I tell all my friends that when my kids hit high school (when I have kids), they will watch “Friends” because it is an amazing life lesson as to what life can look like with the ups and downs.
